Rule 1: Always coordinate pop's of color. Make sure to establish a base color (brown or gray) then accent with a splash of color. Some examples include hot pink, yellow, turquoise etc. No need to include every family member in the accent color.
Rule 2: Layering outfits gives a lot of character to your photos, depending on the season this may be difficult to do. Some ideas could be using jackets, sweaters, hats, vests or leg warmers.
Rule 3: Combining solid colors and patterns works well. Another way to gain more visual appeal is to throw in some patterns that coordinate with your color splashes. An awesome way to do this is maybe having the man dress in a plaid shirt with the colors chosen and having the child or significant other dressed in the solid color from that of the mans shirt.
Rule 4: Always bring your own personality in with accessories...hat's, leg warmers (for little girls), scarves, necklaces, watchers etc. Adding these trinkets helps to bring in your own family style and personality out in the photos.
Rule 5: Ladies! Make sure to put makeup on. I highly recommend blush, lipstick/gloss and Mascara if you do not like to go with full on makeup. My preference would be that you do your makeup from A-Z but if you are not a makeup person I recommend the minimum to make you glow in the pictures!
Rule 6: Wear something that is flattering on you. I know this may sound like a "given" but I'm surprised to hear a lot of Mom's who come to their family photo shoot and complain about how they "hate" their arms or tummy areas but yet are wearing a short cropped sleeve and tight shirt that draws attention their arms and belly area. If you are self-conscious about your arms, tummy, thighs etc., Please wear a loose shirt with long sleeve. If you are not a fan of your butt or thighs please wear something to cover it maybe a long jacket or sweater. You must feel comfortable and feel like yourself that way you glow and so does your picture!
